OpenLab Turkey- IYCr2014
The OpenLab Turkey, organized to celebrate IYCr2014 (an IUCr/UNESCO initiative), was held on 19 - 22 January 2015 and was organized by PANalytical B.V., Atomika Teknik and UNAM, the Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology.
The event took place at UNAM, at the campus of the private Bilkent University, just outside of Ankara. During 4 days the attendees were trained in X-ray powder diffraction. They not only enjoyed presentations but also hands-on sessions on software and practicals on sample preparation and data collection with the X’Pert MPD installed at UNAM.
The workshop was in great demand and only 30 of the 150 applicants could be accepted. The participants were PhD students, researchers and young professionals also from industry and came mainly from Turkey, but also from Egypt, Albania, Iraq and Italy. Prof. Artioli from the Italian Padova University explained the basics of crystallography, powder diffraction and Rietveld refinement, and PANalytical’s Marco Sommariva presented a lecture about sample preparation, discussed details of the instrumental setups for powder diffraction and gave practical guidelines for data collection.
Both presentations and practical sessions were much appreciated by the participants of this OpenLab event. Considering the large amount of applications and interest, there was a general consensus to organize a follow-up of this successful workshop.
